October 28, 1890, died 1966
Abe
De Hate was of French Canadian descent and was widely known as a fine
boat carpenter and builder, gaining an early reputation as a builder of
the best duck boats available.

Abraham
DeHate / Bass Decoy
Carved and painted wood with attached metal fins and carpet tack eyes.
Length 13", Circa 1920
DeHate was the creator of hundreds of extraordinary
duck and fish decoys and his work bridged the earlier, less decorative
pieces of the 19th Century with the elaborately finished mid-Twentieth
century decoys.
As his many fine Ice Spears attest, DeHate was
also highly skilled in metal working, and as a carpenter, boatwright,
sculptor and metal worker, represents the multi-discipline genius of the
greatest master carvers. He
died on February 9, 1966.
