Meldrum / Bass Decoy
Yock Meldrum was a woodcarver and boatwright who resided in Mt. Clemens and produced a large body of work during the 1930's. As illustrated by these rare examples, Meldrum's style was realistic but highly stylized in both form and painting technique. Like Hans Janner's fish, Meldrum's were fancifully carved, but with more austerely shaped fins and more realistic bodylines.

Walleye Decoy During his lifetime, Meldrum's creations were prized for their originality of design but even more coveted for their efficacy. On a level far beyond most of the other Master Carver's work, Meldrum's creations were legendary in their ability to attract game fish and provide food for the table. |
